A recent update to Windows 10 has caused many users of older software (including MYOB®) to see this message (or similar) when they try to run that software:

Assest

Microsoft has increased security to prevent software without a digital certificate from running - most older software does not have a digitial certificate, including older MYOB® versions.

The older software is often perfectly safe, Microsoft is simply preventing it as an extra security precaution. In future all developers will need to add digitial certificates to their software.

Most older software such as MYOB® will not be updated. If you want to continue to use the older software, there are many internet sites with show how to 'unblock' the older software and allow it to run. For example see some methods outlined here. There are numerous other such methods on the web.

Which method will work depends on a number of factors (for example how old your MYOB® version is) and the methods outlined in the above post won't work in all instances. Some methods require you to switch off certain protections and this could invite trouble down the track.

Based on our experience while fixing this issue remotely (as well as feedback from other users) the best method seems to be the batch file method. So far this has worked on 100% of cases and does not require you to compromise your system. In our example below the path to your MYOB executable is C:\Plus19\myob.exe. The simplest batch file method is as follows:
  • Open Notepad - on 1st line enter @ECHO OFF and on 2nd line enter C:\Plus19\myob.exe
  • Save the file as RunMyob.bat - save this where-ever you can, it doesn't matter
  • Open a File Explorer window and locate the above file, right click on it and select Create Shortcut, save shortcut to Desktop
  • Right click on the Shortcut and select Properties
  • On the Shortcut tab click Advanced and then tick Run as Administrator, then click Ok Ok etc to close.
  • Double Click on shortcut to run MYOB®, you may see a UAC popup asking if you want to allow this program to make changes, click Yes - MYOB® should now run, click Open and navigate to your company file.

Note:
You may need some-one with Administrator privileges to set up the above solution. We have tried to keep it simple however you can modify the batch file to open a specific company file. If you need to install MYOB®, follow the above process for the setup or installation file. Same procedures apply.

If you would like assistance with getting MYOB® to work, we can provide this remotely - see link here.
