Updating prices in AR2024 is relatively straight-forward for most users. Export the items, update the prices, import.

However for some users, it's a 'nightmare'.

Recently a AR2024 user sent us their online company file and their import file. They were having trouble updating their item prices and kept getting errors and timeouts. One of the reasons was they had over 60k items to update.

We did a test import using the file offline. On a high spec computer the import process took over 14 hours to complete. These were the results according to importlog.txt:

• 63k records imported without errors.
• Error -4077: You have sales for this item
  This error message is misleading and caused by MYOB bug - occurred 567 times
• Error -1015: The ItemName must be specified
  This error message is misleading and caused by quote marks in Item Number - occurred 132 times
• Error -6: Item Number may not be blank
  Caused by blank lines in import file - user error - occurred 64k times.
• Error -7: Item Number may not be more than 30 characters
  Caused by use of quote marks in Item Numbers - one error.

While the majority of the items were correctly updated, the process took an unbelievably long time and there were almost 700 items that were not updated. While data is being imported into MYOB, the company file cannot be used for transaction processing etc.

Things that cause problems updating Item prices include:

• Having too many Items for MYOB to handle efficiently. While there is no technical limit on the number of Items in a file, based on our testing were think the practical limit is around 5k Items - we can remove Items in bulk if required
• Using non alpha numeric characters in Item Number such as quote marks for inches, commas, degrees symbols etc as these complicate the export and import process
• Using multiple lines in the description field as this can cause alignment problems in excel etc
• Using leading 0 in the Item Number as these can cause problems when opening in excel etc
• Using characters like - or = at the beginning of the Item Number as these can cause problems when opening in excel etc
• Having Item Numbers that differ only by upper/lower case, such as 100B and 100b
